Morning Devotions July 7-21, 2006

Alk waabaa!

Have you ever panned for gold? Sometimes reading the Bible feels like that—sifting through a lot of words to find the ones that are your own personal treasure.

In this devotional "booklet" you will find nuggets of gold from the Bible that different ABCers have treasured for themselves. By telling you of their own encounter with God through Scripture, they hope to encourage you in your journey of faith.

Our trip to Ghana is many journeys wrapped into one
• a trek to another continent
• a deepening of our relationship with God
• an excursion of discovery and learning
• a time of personal growth

It is our prayer that through it all God will do an awesome work in your lives. Open yourself to him ever day, and see what God will do in you and through you.

Read: Follow Jesus
“As they were walking along someone said to Jesus, ‘I will follow you no matter where you go.’ But Jesus replied, ‘Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but I, the Son of Man, have no home of my own, not even a place to lay my head.’ He said to another person, ‘Come, be my disciple.’ The man agreed, but he said, ‘Lord, first let me return home and bury my father.’ Jesus replied, ‘Let those who are spiritually dead care for their own dead. Your duty is to go and preach the coming of the Kingdom of God.’ Another said, ‘Yes, Lord, I will follow you, but first let me say good-bye to my family.’ But Jesus told him, ‘Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God.’” Luke 10:57-62

Jesus was born homeless, in a stable meant to be a shelter for animals. And after he began his public ministry, he became homeless again, by choice. He walked from town to town, preaching, teaching, healing. He didn’t know where his next meal was coming from, or where he would lay down to sleep the next night. He was dependent on the kindness of strangers to take care of him. Some of those strangers would become his disciples.

In this passage, Jesus challenges those who say they want to become his disciples. Following Jesus means that we cannot let anything else, no matter how meaningful or important, come between us: we have to let go of family, obligations, comfort, friends, money, jobs-- anything that we would like to cling to (instead of Jesus) for security. Following Jesus means we must give up what is comfortable and safe, and follow him FIRST.

You will have the experience of not having your own home in these next few weeks. You will be outside of your own comfort zone. The challenge for each person on this team is to do this while following Jesus, to let him use you as his disciple.

Think:
Why did Jesus choose to be homeless?
What does it mean to you to follow Jesus?
What challenge from this passage can you use in this week?

Saturday, July 8

Read:
"The true children of God are those who let God's Spirit lead them."  Romans 8:14

The Holy Spirit has put on your hearts to touch a people group from another part of the world and to continue the work of Jesus. May you be blessed with the Fruit of the Spirit.

"Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you."  Hebrews 13:5

There is never a place where God is not present and never a time when God is not speaking. Never. Though you may be far from your earthly home, God is closer to you than you may ever have felt before, because of the love you have shown in His name.

"And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus."
Philippians 4:19

Our loving Father cares for us and knows our every need. May His abundant grace and love continue to bless you as you joyfully proclaim that God is good -- all the time.

Jackie Kelsey

Think:
How can you let God’s Spirit guide you today?
What does it mean to you that God is with you on this trip, in this country, in the bus, on the road, as you meet new people?
What needs do you have today that you must trust God today to fill?
